All over Indonesia, masks are used in various ritualistic theater performances known broadly as ‘Topeng’. These can range from reenactments of mythical stories to entertaining theatrical dances, and often feature a broad cast of characters distinguishable by the unique masks worn by the performers. The present example is notably petite in stature, bearing a furious expression on the face. It’s mouth is twisted into an emotional scowl bearing teeth, matched by the furrowed brow and narrow eyes. Many layers of multicolored paint attest that the mask was worn for an extended period of time, in addition to the greatly oxidized and worn backside where the wood touched the dancers face. A truly wonderful and unique example of Indonesian carving.
