Figure

Turka, Burkina Faso

Late 19th - Early 20th century

Wood

31cm Tall

Provenance:

Sebastien Fernandez, New York

This wonderfully sculpted male figure comes from a semi-prolific Turka workshop, recognizable mostly from the abstracted treatment of the face and frequent use of large, diagonal facial scarification. This example is particularly special for being one of only a few with his hand up to his chin. The contemplative posture comes together perfectly with the abstracted forms of the body, which is heightened by a reddish-brown ritual patina.
